De Palestijnse vlag was vroeger de vlag van de Arabische nationale beweging. In 1948 is hij tot Palestijnse vlag uitgeroepen. De kleuren gaan terug naar oude tijden: de tijd van de Profeet Mohammed (zwart), de Khawarij (rood), de Omayyaden (wit) en de Fatimiden (groen).

Het Palestinian Center for Human Rights te Gaza (PCHR) meldt per 9 augustus in Gaza 1994 doden en 8008 gewonden; per 11 augustus is er een nieuw bestand; voorts massale verwoestingen (naast de 'gewone' dagelijkse aanvallen op de Palestijnse samenleving in de West-Bank). An analysis by Unitar/Unosat, an agency of the United Nations, found that about 600 structures had been destroyed in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City in the first two and a half weeks of the Israeli incursion. Israeli officials have said that one of the goals of the incursion is to destroy tunnels leading from Gaza to Israel.Shejaiya has been the site of some of the worst fighting.
