Israel’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni has cancelled her trip to South Africa following protests from local pro-Palestinian groups.
She was invited by the Jewish Board of Deputies to give a series of talks in Cape Town and Johannesburg later this week.
Livni has been accused of being a war criminal as she was influential in ordering attacks in Gaza in January 2009, in which more than 1,000 people died.
However, a spokesperson from the Israeli Foreign Ministry told Eyewitness News Livni’s cancellation had nothing to do with South African groups seeking to arrest her for her role in the attacks.
The official reason for the cancellation of her visit is the ongoing Foreign Ministry strike.
Israeli Foreign Ministry workers have been on a go slow for the last month demanding higher salaries.
Dr Yusuf Saloojee off the Palestine Solidarity Alliance said they will continue to push for the South African government to arrest her.
