CALL TO OXFAM – THE SCARLET JOHANSSON CASE
Amsterdam, 27 January 2014
Dear Sir / Madam,
From reports in the media, we have learned that the actress Scarlet Johansson is obviously of the opinion that she can reconcile her ambassadorship for Oxfam with being a spokesmodel of the Israeli company SodaStream that has a principal manufacturing facility in the (illegal) Jewish settlement of Mishor Adumim on the West Bank.
As far as Oxfam is concerned, this is contrary to its policies.
Mrs Johansson is mistaken in her view that ‘economic cooperation’ in this case ‘can build a bridge to peace’, since the conditions that prevail on the occupied West Bank only allow for economic oppression and impoverishment of the Palestinians.
We therefore urge you to demand from Mrs Johansson that she severs all connections with SodaStream, and if she is not inclined to do so, to drop her as Oxfam ambassador. Oxfam’s credibility is at stake here.
We requested our members and political friends to forward this call upon you on an individual basis as well.
Sincerely yours,
Wim Lankamp
