De "Kamercommissie Buitenland" werd woensdagochtend een
petitie aangeboden
[o.a. pleitend voor sancties richting Israel] terwijl bij de
Kameringang
tussen 9 en 12 uur plm.
50 personen een demonstratieve zeer zichtbare picketactie
hielden.
Minister Bot [NL is komend EU-voorzitter] maakte in de
vergadering duidelijk
niets te voelen voor opschorting van het EU-associatieverdrag
[waarin een
mensenrechtenparagraaf] met Israel.
Twee uur MO-discussie ging voor 90 % over Palestina-Israel;
betreffend deel
grotendeels over ...... Arafat [kennelijk de kern van alle
MO-problematiek].
Een interessante waarneming.

Kom naar de solidariteitsbijeenkomst in het kader van de
huidige
ontwikkelingen in Palestina en Irak. Met als hoofdgasten
Abdelbary Atwan
en Souad Srour.
Als hoofdredacteur van Al Quds Al Arabi en sinds 1991 lid van
het
Palestijnse Parlement, is Abdelbary Atwan zeer gewaardeerd in
de
Arabische wereld, een scherpe commentator over het Midden
Oosten
conflict en een bekend gezicht op de meeste internationale
nieuwsprogramma's.
Souad Srour is een van de getuigen die als overlevende van de
Sabra en
Shatila (Libanon) slachting in 1982, Sharon proberen aan te
klagen in
Brussel. Ternauwernood aan de dood ontsnapt, besteed zij als
zwaargewonde nog dagelijks haar tijd en energie voor de
Palestijnse strijd.
Verder met sprekers uit o.a. de Marokkaanse, Irakese en
Palestijnse
gemeenschap in Nederland en een cultureel programma met muziek
en hapjes.

Johannes Abeling, graduate of the Royal Art Academy in the
Hague and
a freelance Dutch photojournalist, is back in Palestine
shooting
photos. On 19th May, Johannes found himself in Rafah in the
middle
of the peaceful protest march by local residents that ended
when
Israeli combat helicopters and tanks opened fire on the
demonstrators, killing at least 8 people and wounding about
50,
including many children. This series of photographs is from
theh
Brazil neighborhood in Rafah, which has seen many homes
demolished
during Israel's ongoing "Operation Rainbow".

AFTER RAFAH, EUROPE, ARABS
HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR INACTION

Things must be bad in Palestine when the United States
allows a resolution to pass in the UN Security Council, as
it did late on 19 May condemning Israeli actions. The
resolution is a moral victory for Palestinians, but there
is no reason to take comfort from it as Israel intensified
its attack on the Gaza refugee camp. Unless the other
members of the Security Council and the wider
international community act immediately to halt Israel's
assault, we can conclude that the UN Resolution was
designed only to absolve them from any further action. EI
co-founder Ali Abunimah names some specific actions the
international community must take.
