9-16 november internationale actieweek tegen Israel's apartheidsmuur
- Dinsdag 9-11 werd door de ECCP [Europees Palestinanetwerk] in Brussel
een petitie aangeboden aan de ambassade van EU-voorzitter Nederland.
De petitie [over de zgn. European Neighbourhood Policy, Israel privileges
toekennend] werd gesteund door 700 organisaties in 22 landen van Europa.
- Eind deze week wordt die petitie ook aangeboden in Den Haag.

The Wall must Fall
9-16 November, week of international solidarity with the Palestinians
against Israel's wall of landgrab and apartheid
Boycot Israel as long as Israel boycots international law!
Saturday 13 november, in 5 Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den
Haag, Haarlem en Groningen) boycot-flyering actions will take place
in protest of the construction of the apartheidswall on occupied Palestinian
territory. We call for a boycot of Israeli products and services in
order to put pressure on Israel to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian
territories, to pull down the wall, to recognize the right of return
of the Palestinaian refugees and to put an end to the discrimination
of the Palestinians in Israel.

Six weeks of anniversaries
On 2 November, Palestine began a series of anniversaries: the event
that
brought the Palestine issue to the forefront of world concern/disruption,
the Balfour Declaration, 2 November 1917; the UN Partition resolution;
the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR); and, the UN resolution
establishing the UN Conciliation Commission for Palestine and calling
for
the return of Palestinian refugees.
The period ends 11 December with demonstrations and calls for boycott,
divestment, and sanctions against Israel resulting from the recent
meeting
of the European Coordinating Committee of NGO's Working on Palestine
(ECCP)
and the European Social Forum. A main element of the campaign will
be to
demand the suspension of the European Association Agreement with Israel.
The
date was chosen to mark the signing of the UDHR and also put Palestine
on
the international agenda.
Day of Solidarity, Partition of Palestine
The Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is 29 November,
the day
Resolution 181 was adopted by the United Nations. The Resolution,
57 years
ago, called for the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab
state
in opposition to the desires of its majority, the Palestinian-Arab
residents. In 1977, the UN declared 29 November the UN Day of Solidarity
with the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.
Human Rights Day
December 10 is the annual commemoration of International Human Rights
Day
and the 56th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration
of
Human Rights. Among the basic rights in the declaration is the right
"to
leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country"
and the
"right to own property" and not be "arbitrarily deprived
of his property".
Palestinian Right of Return, establishment of the UNCCP
Eleven December is the 56th anniversary of Resolution 194 (III) affirming
the right of Palestinian refugees and displaced persons to return
and
repossess their homes and property and receive compensation for damages
and
losses. The Resolution created no new rights or laws, it simply reflected
existing international law and practice.
Resolution 194 also established the Conciliation Commission for Palestine
(UNCCP), the primary international body mandated to provide protection
to
Palestinian refugees and search for lasting solutions to the Arab-Israeli
conflict. It identified the private property owned by Palestinian
Arabs in
Palestine before the establishment of Israel in 1948 resulting in
453,000
records totaling 1.5 million individual holdings.
But the UNCCP has not been provided with the machinery or resources
to carry
out its mandate since 1952. Since then, there has been no international
body
providing protection for Palestinian refugees or searching for durable
solutions to their plight and an end to the conflict.
Palestinian refugees still left out
Efforts by the international community to include the Palestinian
people in
the community of nations continue to exclude the Palestinian refugees,
a
majority of Palestinians, from the universal rights accorded to persons
around the world. For more than 55 years, the international community
has
supported refugees around the world who simply want to go home, recognizing
that a durable peace is not possible against the unfulfilled desire
and
right of
refugees to return home. Palestinian refugees deserve the same.

AMNESTY GOES IDFA
Tijdens het International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (18
t/m 28 november) presenteert IDFA in samenwerking met Amnesty International
en Stichting DOEN een nieuw programmaonderdeel. Zaterdagmiddag 20
november staan twee documentaires die in aanmerking komen voor de
Amnesty International-DOEN Award op het programma van 'Amnesty goes
IDFA'. Een jury bekijkt tijdens het festival alle documentaires uit
de Amnesty International-DOEN competitie en kiest vervolgens een winnaar.
Dit jaar bestaat de jury uit Heddy Honigmann (regisseuse), Sam Gregory
(programma directeur van het video en mensenrechten project 'Witness')
en Hans Thoolen (mensenrechtenjurist en voorzitter van de Martin Ennals
Foundation).
PROGRAMMA
'IDFA goes Amnesty' bestaat uit de vertoningen van 'Wall' (S. Bitton,
Frankrijk/Israël 2004) over de gevolgen van de bouw van de muur
tussen Israël en de Palestijnse gebieden en 'The World according
to Bush' (W. Karel, Frankrijk/België/Zwitserland 2004) waarin
de werkwijze van de Amerikaanse regering centraal staat. Daarnaast
geven de makers van de documentaires een toelichting en beantwoorden
vragen. De vertoningen op zaterdag 20 november vinden plaats tussen
13.00 en 17.30 in Cinerama 2, Marnixstraat 400, Amsterdam. Plaatsen
reserveren voor de middag kan vanaf 12 november via de IDFA voorverkoop.

AWARD
Op vrijdagavond 26 november maakt de jury de winnaar van de Amnesty
International-DOEN Award bekend tijdens de IDFA prijsuitreikingceremonie.
Deze Award is de prijs van Amnesty International en Stichting DOEN
voor een documentaire over mensenrechten en menselijke waardigheid
uit het IDFA programma. Een internationale jury bestaande uit filmmakers
en mensenrechtenactivisten beoordeelt jaarlijks circa tien documentaires
die hiervoor in aanmerking komen. De winnaar ontvangt een stipendiumprijs
van 5000 euro. Daarnaast zetten beide organisaties zich in om de film
in Nederland uitgebracht te krijgen.

Palestina en het Nederlands Sociaal Forum 2004
In de Beurs van Berlage, Damrak 277 Amsterdam, zal op 26, 27 en 28
november het eerste Nederlands Sociaal Forum plaatsvinden.

Het is tijd voor sancties om Israël onder druk te zetten. Als
voorzitter van Europa heeft Nederland een zware verantwoordelijkheid
om Israël tot de orde te roepen. Ook individuele burgers en maatschappelijke
organisaties hebben mogelijkheden om politieke druk uit te oefenen.

Muziekspektakel Shouting Fence.
Het Nederlands Sociaal Forum zal muzikaal worden omlijst door Shouting
Fence. Dit spektakel van de Britse componist Orlando Gough is gebaseerd
op de splitsing van een dorp op de Golanhoogte. Tijdens dit muziekspektakel
kan het publiek gevoelsmatig beleven wat de bouw van de muur voor
de gemeenschappen betekent.
